Inverters convert battery stored DC power into usable 230V AC power. There are two main types of off grid inverter.

Pure Sinewave Inverter
A pure sine wave inverter produces a nearly perfect sinewave output (less than 3% total harmonic distortion) that is essentially the same as utility-supplied grid power. Thus it is compatible with all AC electronic devices. As it's design is more complex it is the most expensive type.

Modified Sinewave Inverter
The output of a modified sinewave inverter (modified square wave, quasi square) is similar to a square wave output except that the output goes to zero volts for a time before switching positive or negative. It is simple and low cost and is compatible with most electronic devices, except for sensitive or specialized equipment, for example certain laser printers, audio equipment and some games consoles.
